The corpse flower, also known as Titan arum and affectionately nicknamed Smellanie, is one of fewer than 1,000 in existence worldwide. Native to Sumatra, the Titan arum can take up to 10 years to bloom for the first time. When it finally does, it’s a true showstopper. Queensland flower farms have taken a hit, with more stores choosing to import roses at a cheaper price this Valentines Day. Lyn Bayfield has made a living from cupid's arrow, but this year her flower farm hasn't had a single enquiry from a florist. "We can't as an Australian producer compete with the overseas product… one of the major wholesalers was selling roses at $8 a bunch to the florist, and they come from South Africa” - Eumundi Roses, Lyn Bayfield.
