Thomas Adès, one of the leading British composers of his generation, wrote Lieux retrouvés (“Places Rediscovered”) for cello and piano in 2009 for Steven Isserlis. Drawing on a wide range of influences, the piece's four movements evoke a series of landscapes—from still waters and mountain paths to a field at nighttime—before culminating in the finale, seen here in this clip.
